Unbeknownst to many across the U.S and other parts of the world, television broadcasters were making, or had already made the shift, from analog to digital broadcasting. This was exemplified by the fact that analog T.V’s have continued to sell at a moderate pace despite the proliferation of newer, digital-ready models out on the market.

What this meant for many in the U.S was that one day their television sets inexplicably stopped working, or so it seemed. It was a suddenly cheerless, frightening world, one bereft of the hilarity of Family Guy, the antics of House, daytime soaps for the ladies, and the utter lack of any professional sports for the men.

Of course there was a solution to the madness, and it didn’t involve the complete downfall of society, or making up your own shows in the snowy images now dominating your analog T.V. Several options were available for those stuck in analog limbo. One was to purchase a new, digital-ready television. This option came with additional perks, as many newer models with this feature also offered superior picture quality over older model televisions, but for those on a budget, this simply wasn’t a viable option.

Another option was to rent a converter from their cable company. This was a far more convenient option than buying a new T.V, though for many, having to rent a converter box for any length of time was just an additional expense on top of the already mounting monthly bills.

A far more attractive option for most was to buy their own digital converter, allowing them to permanently maintain their analog T.V in working order, without any pesky monthly fees. Converter boxes can be purchased not only directly from cable companies, but also at many electronics stores, and even at flea markets and other venues.

Unsurprisingly, shopping for digital cable converters online is also a great option. Major online retailers often sell these devices, as well as several online specialty and electronics stores which also sell the devices. Digital cable converters are simple to hook up, and absolutely anyone who’s ever hooked up a VCR, DVD player, or video game console to a T.V before will have no problem doing so.

Depending on your cable company, you may also need to consider purchasing a box with analog pass-through capabilities, which allows it to accurately display both analog and digital signals. This is necessary if you enjoy certain stations which are exempt from making the switch to digital broadcasting, or if you live outside the U.S where stations are not (yet) mandated to broadcast in digital only.

Lastly, it’s important not to confuse these boxes with actual cable service. You’ll still need to be receiving a digital cable signal from a cable company for it to be converted into an analog signal for your T.V. Converting a non-existent digital signal into an analog signal still amounts to no signal, and no T.V shows. So get the converter, get a signal, and get watching T.V in all its digital glory.
